First Meeting with Advisor - What should I ask/Look out for?

Hi Knowledgeable ones!

I’ve got my first meeting with a mortgage advisor tonight. What should I look out for? Is there any particular questions I should ask to ensure he’s giving me legitimate advice?

Ensure you receive a business card and Initial Disclosure Document outlining their market access and any fees. This should be given to you before any discussion takes place.

Ask how long the individual has been transacting UK mortgages and what experience he/she has. Just because the company they work for may have been around for a few years you could be the first appointment that individual has ever been to on their own.

Make sure they take all your information accurately, checking salary details and incomes against your payslips etc.

They should also verify your identity by passport/driving license etc.

Make sure they show you their sourcing results and the filters used to attain the results. Ask to see the sourcing result screen, and ask to see the results in monthly payment order. Get them to explain how it works and where the recommendation they are making sits in comparison to others, and their reasons for the recommendation.

Most of all is to commit to nothing on the day. Expect to have to sign a fact find (which is simply to veryfy the accurace of the information he/she has taken from you) but do not sign any application forms etc until you have had time to discuss and go over the information properly.

Get them to fully explain the whole process including timescales to you, and all the associated costs etc involved.

Not an exhaustive list but enought o be going on with.
