barclaycard denying i ever had an account

hi all. im just in the process of checking to see wether or not an old credit card had had ppi added to it. it was closed 4 years ago. im having a very frustrating time trying to get the details i need. barclaycard denying having any record of my old card. its in black and white on my credit report! i am being passed from department to department and given have been given 3 different addresses to write to in less than a week. im sure they are giving me the run around deliberately. has anyone else had a similar experience.

  • Do you have the paperwork? If so, copy it and send that to them. it seems a lot of banks are stalling at the moment.

Once debts are closed, they no longer have to hold any paperwork. Your information can be archived off system into a non-relevant filing system and they can genuinely not find you as they have no reason to hold that information any more. Some firms are very quick to archive information or destroy information. Others less so. Based on past comments on the board, Barclaycard are quick to archive/destroy.

Yes, but they don't need to keep it for 6 years.

If your account has been closed within the last 6 years are they duty bound to find all information held on ANY file if a SAR is sent?

As above, only if they hold information. They have no requirement to send you data that they no longer have or no longer hold on a non-relevant filing system.

The destroying of data on closed accounts or archiving in such a way that is not on a relevant filing system is quite common.

This is not true. They are only required to provide information held in a relevant filing system - that is information which would pass the "Temp Test" described in this document published by the Information Commissioner.

I'm afraid more and more banks are using any excuse to block PPI claims. Many are denying any account until people come up with an account number.
Best bet for the op would be a good look for any paperwork you hold,I found some old account numbers on a copy of my equifax file from 2004 when they still seemed to put the full numbers on.
I luckily from an old CCA request have a copy of my application so if they say they don't have the details I will use that and any payments I can find to work out a speculative claim based of estimated figures ( I have some statements as well to use),if they want to challenge my figures let them produce the evidence (amazing the number of claims I have seen when they say no documents they suddenly they "find" them once a claim is started).

OP have you actually done a proper SAR or just tried to get info on the phone?

Are they saying they can't find anything or that it has been destroyed?
