Depressing, isn't it? Any wonder we resseructed the open fire/back boiler?

It'd be worse if all my records were computerised - the first fill of oil for this house (94) was approx 9p pl!

I am so glad that the house we are in as FTB has a back boiler in it. It only heats the hot water tank, but its better than nothing. My next door neighbour installed a wood burning stove by himself and linked it up to his hot water and central heating. Whats even better is he gets from work free wood offcuts so every weekend he comes home with the trailer full of wood cuttings and essentially heats his house for free.

I think in our next house (when ever that might be!) that I would look to have one of these stoves too.

My family thought I was mad in '94 when I linked in a high output back boiler & all night burner - not with any great intention of using it, but the house was in pieces & the plumbing was being redone so it seemed like a good idea. (It was hidden most of the time with a decorative fire screen).

I can't remember how much extra the link up actually cost (£450 -£500?) but it was certainly worth every penny last winter: the fire was on 24/7!

It was a great thing to have i'm sure last winter. We were away so missed all the snow and frozen pipes etc... Thankfully FIL had a small heater in hallway and put heating timer on for a few hours per day to avoid any damage. It was a great feeling to have piping hot water heated by the fireplace for washing/bathing last weekend when we had the fire on.

Ordered oil today - coming tomorrow.
