Also, always wondered why the prices in the NW seem to be lower than other areas - any ideas?

I can only guess that maybe it's to do with Donegal based suppliers/wholesalers.

I've been told that cross-border supply of heating fuel is illegal although I can't understand how that could be consistent with EU rules. However, I've never seen an oil tanker from the republic in NI.
Is the NW situation more likely to be due to (a) competition from gas or (b) oil actually coming into the port and not having to haul it from Belfast?
  • I am new to oil and got 500ltrs for £280, is that good?

    Thankyou

I dont think it is any cheaper up here. I bought last week at £525 yet Bangor was £515

I will say Coleraine is always the cheapest for diesel though. So much so its not worth driving down to Ballymena for the 5p off at Mr T s

I'm sure it is illegal for heating oil to cross the border but I'm also pretty sure that it doesn't stop it happening..
I don't know if the gas competition or not having to haul from port are factors either as prices in Belfast itself are still generally more than in the NW.
  • I am not immune to driving across the border to fill up with cheaper deisel - it is unfortunate that we can't get cheaper home heating oil too.

When ordering through the week and checking the price comparison sites, I too noticed that oil seemed to be cheaper in country areas than in Belfast. We also noticed that when driving through Fermanagh last week, coal prices seemed to be advertised at much lower prices than we were paying up in the big smoke!

Maybe it is the usual grass is always greener on the other side thing, but just seems Belfast prices are on the high side for home heating

We ordered a small delivery of oil now, taking a chance to see how the prices go!
DJWW - cos we won't let it!

Heating oil is more expensive in Eire because they pay a higher rate of VAT on it
    We only pay5%

I phoned my usual supplier today to order oil, normally they have a lorry at the door before i've put the phone down as they are just round the corner, earliest delivery they could offer was 2 weeks away! ordered elsewhere for slightly cheaper and delivery within 3 days. No doubt we'll run dry in 2 days time and the missus gets the "i told you to order last week" hump on :)

    £514 for 900 litres btw. :(

just digging out old receipts and having a weep at prices. Sept 09, 900l for £325. April 10, 900l (top up) for £424. Looks as if the cheapest I can get 900l for now is £511.95. :(

    Correction: £511 from Bangor Fuels
