What to do in Macclesfield?

We have another short trip away arranged thanks to the cheapo Travelodge deals. :j Macclesfield Central this time - chosen cos it was the nearest available to the Peak District. Sun 16th to Wed 19th Oct.

Was thinking of visiting Buxton, Hathersage and Castleton?? Any other suggestions of places to visit/walks to do/things to see would be much appreciated. Also any good places to eat in the evenings. We are 2 adults with car and enjoy the usual stuff....bit of walking, sightseeing, shopping etc.

Have had some terrific help from MSE'rs in the past with insider info....

Many thanks

Deffo go to buxton by car... not to look round, but just for the drive on road towards buxton. There are average speed cameras now, as bikers are unable to ride in a straight line, however the average is 50, which is difficult to achieve on the windy bits, even in a hire car. They've ruined the straight bit along the cat and fiddle though :(

There is also a pretty little village just down from buxton on a6 called ashford in the water, love stopping off there on way back from meetings.

And if you like walks, monsal head near by has some nice walks, esp over the aqueduct, and I think the old train tunnels are now opened up too!

Castleton is nice, theres some nice roads round there if you like a drive, and that underground boat tour thing to the caves is good if you're not claustrophobic. Eyam might be worth a visit too with some nice walks and a bit of history

Tideswell's a pretty village, it's sort of midway between Castleton and Ashford. Chatsworth isn't too far from Bakewell, and i you like old houses then Haddon Hall is lovely.

Tatton Park (NT) is close by, and some nice restaurants in Knutsford
Or an evening meal in Wilmslow or Alderley Edge and play spot the WAG - all the Man Utd players live round that way!
Lots of nice walking in the hills or the Middlewood Way is a bit more sedate along the canal

If you want an amazing panini (or a delicious selection of cakes), check out the Cheshire Gap in Macclesfield, you'll be spoilt for choice. They also do good breakfasts.

in Bakewell you want to buy an authentic Bakewell Pudding - Kippling invented the tart .....

but the Bakewell Pudding is wonderful

Why not stop at the Cat and Fiddle Pub which is on the road between Macclesfield and Buxton - the road is called the Cat and Fiddle as the pub is the only thing on it apart from a few farms and a tea room and lots and lots of open mooorland and sheep. It is a spectacular drive over the tops of the moors with great views.

If you go to Castleton you can do down the Blue John Caverns....

Matlock Bath and go to Heights of ABraham in the Cable car..

How long are you stopping for? What types of activities do you like? I live in the Peaks so can suggest more - i have not read the rest of the thread yet so will see what has been suggested so far..
