Young Driver Insurance Policies - Best Price Search

Hello everyone...

My request is that if you have recently insured a 17 year old newly qualified driver - what did you pay and who are you insured with...

My son is 17, passed his test this week and is a trainee chef.his work requires him to work unsocial hours and split shifts - so having a car is important to him. He cannot use public transport to get to and from work.

He is not eligible for young driver policies that barr the use of the car between 11pm and 6am, his work includes early starts and late finishes and times are unpredictable dependant on diners!

He does have a rare genetic medical condition that prevents him being outdoors for any length of time in daylight [exposure to UV rays can and does lead to skin cancer and he is under several medical teams to manage his condition] He does not qualify for any benefits whatsoever for this condition even though it is a lifelong condition and he has regular lesion removals through accidental exposure since diagnosis...

He has been amazingly strong in coping since his diagnosis in May 2010 and we were so proud of him for getting a job and even more so when he has been told that he is being promoted because he has worked so hard.

So anyone that can help in any way in finding a reasonable car insurance quote would be a tremendous help...

His car is a Nissan Almera 1497cc 3 door on an '02' plate [a car donated to him by a relative]

He was born 28 June 1994.

Many thanks

JB

You really need to do your own research - there are so many variables that the cheapest for one 17 year old can be expensive for another.

If his medical condition is impacting on the premiums you are getting quoted, then see if a local broker (not swinton) can help (worth trying a local broker anyway to see if they are competitive).

Or is there a charity that looks after sufferers of his condition? Often specialist charities devoted to medical conditions have arrangements with insurers who understand the condition and its particular problems when getting insurance cover.

    .

I have spent three days doing every comparison and independant online quoting service, I have spoken to Macmillan Cancer and also the National group for his condition - there is no help available.... nor in the form of benefits from the state [ although his condition is serious - it does not affect his mobility ]

I just need to know what other people are being quoted to know if I should stop looking or keep trying...

Quotes we are getting are stupidly high - no wonder people drive uninsured....

All quotes will depend on market rates and other factors such as postcode, occupation, vehicle type etc. etc. Unfortunately although you view the quotes as "stupidly high" this is what the insurers are charging for the risk they are taking. It may be worth looking a lower group vehicles and selling the one he has to save money on the insurance.

Try Co-op, Aviva, NFU as they don't use aggregator sites. Also definately approach a broker as they may have access to other schemes that are not advertised.

Unfortunately young driver insurance is high in the first year - good news is that it should drop in 2nd year owing to a year's experience and no claims bonus. Try all the usual tips like adding older experienced drivers.

Good luck - all parents with young drivers have been there and it really does involve a lot of leg work.

What are you being quoted by the way - young driver quotes are generally anywhere upwards of £2k for a low group car.

Have you tried direct line ?
  • We used Insure the box last year for my 18 year old son, he was 17 and 3 months at time of passing his test and cost 3200, cheapest we could find, and he worked nights and evenings and this was not a problem

hope this helps, all being well in three weeks time his insurance will go down to just under 1000 pound after the first year
