I know it's all doom and gloom but what can be done about it?

I wondered if you knowledgeable people in here could give me some answers to questions I've been pondering over.

I hear a lot of news all the time that tells us the world is going to end and we are all doomed, but nowhere do I read what we can do about it. There must be a better answer than "nothing" otherwise we may as well all give up now.

Do we really need to do anything or will this blow over?

What can we do? For example, will there be a food shortage, do we need to grow our own food? Will energy become too expensive, should we look at solar panels now? Will law and order break down - do we need to make our houses more secure, get a dog? Etc.

And everyone says the banks are our enemy. If that's agreed what if anything can be done about it? What if everyone took their money out, what would happen? Is there anything that could be done if the masses all got together and worked as one? Or are the banks just a scapegoat? What if the debts were just written off and we started again (not practical I know but something to think about). The rich 2% or whatever would be pretty annoyed but what would happen to the rest of us if the masses set up a new independent system?

Why did we need to QE all that money? Where did that money go? Is it because Britain is spending more out than it is getting in in taxes and that makes up the difference or is it the banks holding us to ransom again?

Any answers appreciated. Thanks. :)

You've come to the right place. There's some good posts about making tin foil hats, your own underground shelter and which beans have the longest shelf life.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to advise you. They're easy to spot, they're the ones with 'The End is Nigh' sandwichboards.

The basic solution is not to care too much about all this, and do the obvious things. Pay down debt. Work smarter, increase your skills. Live a good life. Find out if you can start a side business, so if you lose your job you have something to fall back on. Start saving a little bit.

Basically, don't worry too much, do the things that will make you wealthier and happier regardless of whether disaster happens.

The dog's a good idea. It can guard your shelter and when things get really tough you can eat it.

I'd suggest two smaller dogs. You might not be able to eat a whole big dog before it goes off.
  • we need to, unfortunately, go through a massive period of pain as we adjust ourselves to life with a much smaller public sector. MUCH smaller. This will mean more unemployment. On the upside, these people are so brilliant and well educated they will walk into jobs or if there aren't any, start up businesses.

that is what must happen or we will all end up like greece.

The dog is a bad idea, it costs a fortune, and when the Evil Bad Guys come they will just shoot it.

Some people (Keynesians) believe that it is possible to spend your way out of a recession.
So if you and all your friends and all their friends (etc) started spending money like there's no tomorrow should help.
But what's good for the whole in this society isn't always what's good for the individual. When times are hard the last thing you, as an individual, should be doing is spending money when you should really be saving up a safety net and paying off debts.
  • this is the time a responsible govt should be spending on infrastructure and the like having saved over the good times. however, they didn't save in the good times, they spent like drunken sailors on all manner of lunatic programmes. they didn't just spend what they had. oh no. they borrowed even more, just to spend it on nonsense. now, there genuinely is nothing left.

it would be good if money could be spent on new motorways, hospital buildings, school buildings etc. but it was all wasted on street scene diversity officers and similar tripe

S**t! I know we'll be living in caves and eating weeds but they'll still be a RSPCA surely.

Spending less than you earn, saving a couple of quid for a rainy day, growing your own food, updating your skills, mending things when they break, decreasing your reliance on fossil fuels etc.

Years ago, these things were seen as normal and sensible things to do.

Now if you mention it you're either a doom and gloomer or a ti-foil hatter.
