The joy of car insurance

I received my renewal a couple of days ago (Swiftcover) & despite no claims in the previous 12 months my policy has increased by £200.00,

So like every year I went on to the comparison websites & searched. Having just taken redundancy and not claiming any benefits (nor intending to as I am setting my own business up in the New Year) I gave my occupation as retired.

The cheapest quote I received was £485.00 from the Post Office. I rang them up & they informed me that I should declare myself as unemployed. The policy increased to over £1000.00!!!

The CS rep stated that as I am not in receipt of a pension I cannot class myself as retired. Although she seemed uncertain.

Does anyone know if this is correct as it seems ridiculous.

    What is your current situation?

Are you seeking work? - in which case you're unemployed
Are you simply inactive for a period? - in which case you're a Housewife/husband
Are you never going to work again? - in which case you're retired

Totally incorrect. (And many people retire, then come out of retirement for different reasons)

I am not seeking any work at all. I will be setting my own business up next year but at present I am at home.

So I would argue that you are currently a Housewife/husband or Independent Means - depending on if they have the second one or not.

But if being "retired" works out £500 cheaper, then I would say go "retired", then change that if you come out of retirement and start a new venture in the future.
