We visited a rehoming place not too far from us and we met a gorgeous little Yorkie/Jack cross that's around 18 months old and just lovely. Calm, confident and in good health. She walked well with us, was completely relaxed with our two boys and, after youngest let go of her lead, came back to my wife with a furiously wagging tail. If she's not claimed before, we collect her Monday. Got her jabs, microchipping and spaying lined up ASAP. We can't wait to get her now!! Thanks for the replies re this thread!!
I'm just delighted to hear that. I hope it all goes well. Would love to see pictures!Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

An Update:
Our 'Healthy' dog was collected last Monday, we got her home only to discover she had a hacking cough and was bringing up phlegm. We had previously taken her for a walk to our local park and she seemed full of beans, chasing the frisbee we were throwing and, apart from the cough, was fine. Next day we returned her to the re-homing place to get their vet to check her out and she has been prescribed anti-biotics for this cough which seem to be doing the trick now but she's become very withdrawn. Head down, ears back, tail between the legs and not eating that well and we don't know why. She's okay chasing a ball in the garden but once inside she becomes very introverted. My wife is now worrying that the dog now doesn't like us, and, as she's a rescue dog, that maybe we're doing something wrong here and she doesn't want us.... I'm sure that this cough will stress her, as well as a new home, but are we missing something here? Help please!!0 -
I would take her back to the vet, sounds like she may still be ill. I am sure it's nothing to do with you or your wife. Please keep us updated.0

Sounds like the dreaded kennel cough. I'm sure it's nothing to do with you or your wife, she's probably just feeling sorry for herself and not too well. I would also take her back to the vet just to make sure, lots of gentle praise, but let her come to you, rather then fussing her. Her confidence will come back as soon as she is feeling 100% I'm sure!0

Sounds like she might have kennel cough (but I'm not a vet of course
). Our first rescue came home with kennel cough. Very distressing all round. She too went from a lovely happy bouncy year old pup to feeling very sorry for herself. It's a bit like bronchitis for dogs. The coughing made her vomit too. Nasty, nasty hacking cough.
Dogger made a full recovery though and has never looked back. If you are worried ring your vet's surgery for a chat. They'll tell you if she needs to be seen. Explain you're a new (inexperienced?
) owner and could do with a few pointers to make her comfortable whilst she gets better.
Not much fun for you guys at the moment I'll bet, but it does get better and she will get over this. And massive well done for going down the rescue route. :T
You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.
Oi you lot - please
GIVE BLOOD

have a look around your home... do you have any plugin's the nice smell ones... this could be causing the cough or making it worse..
the spraying of perfum/aftershave... do you use shake and vac on the floor....0 -
I agree that it sounds like kennel cough. The vet prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and pain killers to our pup and the rescue offered to pay - but the vet had only charged us for the medication (£30) so we paid ourselves.
It can make them feel really poorly, but with care and treatment for any secondary infections, the pup will most likely be fine. It's horrible to see them going through it but try not to worry. Our dog slept constantly for the best part of a week and I'd completely forgotten it even happened because he's such a healthy, happy dog now.
Let the vet check her out again and then just follow the advice. We gave our dog lots of bland food - rice and chicken, the water from boiling the chicken to keep his weight up and then just relaxed and let him rest.
I hope your pup is feeling better soon.Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

Also, we kept him away from other dogs, didn't walk him in the park where lots of dogs go and we didn't get his jabs done until he was over the cough.Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

Lungworm can present with similar symptoms to kennel cough - main difference is that the throat isn't so irritated so dog doesn't tend to cough when the area is pressed on slightly, but not a definate diagnosis as the coughing can cause a sore throat.
Treatment for lungworm is a 7 day course of Panacur (not the standard one-off or 3 day dose for regular worming) or 2 treatments of Advocate spot-on (a month apart - first treatment will reduce the infection and second will treat the remaining worms). Could be worth doing as a precaution as the tests for lungworm are quite extensive - chest x-rays, stool analysis over several days, samples from the lung, etc., I would at least mention it to the vet as many don't think of it immediately but it's popping up more and more in the UK, especially certain regions (think South East and Wales are two that are seeing lots of cases, but there are other areas). My two are regularly treated with Advocate to prevent an infection causing any damage (there's no actual preventatives so you can only treat in the hope you catch it before any permanent damage is done), because there's several cases that have occurred in the area, including my mum's pup (who fortunately made a full recovery).

It will probably be a case, of firstly still being ill, and also the fact it's in a new home
I wouldnt be worried, about her not liking you/the family, she still has a lot of settling in to do... I have 5 dogs, and each time we rescue another, they will act slighly out of character when in a new place, and wont fit in probably for 3-4 weeks, in my opnion.0
