Concealed Cisterns -do they all need frames?

Hi Chaps

We are in the final throes of designing our new bathroom and are going to go for a concealed cistern with a back to wall toilet. The loo will sit on the floor so as such, do we need a frame for the cistern and if not how is it secured to the wall when frameless?

The wall in question is a stud wall so would it be strong enough to take the weight of a full cistern?

Help...

it will need some kind of frame to support it, it can't just dangle behind a wall! a lot of them come with their own frame
I would look very carefully at the full specifications and required spaces for a concealed cistern as you will have to build out the wall to give enough room, which isn't always a good idea on a small bathroom....

    Hi there,

I have these in my placed (frameless, fixed to the outside walls via brackets). If you can get a fixing into wooden frame of the stud, should have no worries I would venture.

I have Grohe - very good flush - with a short or long flush option.
  • You can put some more wood in the wall & secure it to that but dont forget you still need to access the top & bottom of the cistern, any isolator & all the flush pipe including where it enters the pan.

I've got a concealed cistern in my bathroom and also in the downstairs cloakroom. The one in the bathroom is fixed to a stud wall and the one in the cloak room is fixed to a block wall. They have both been in situ for over 30 years without any problem at all. They both have framing around them. This is not to support them, but only to conceal them.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Best concealed cisterns on the market are Geberit Up320s. Use with flush plate and you do not need to leave access panels. These are superior to any cable or Pneumatic cisterns on the market today and are not much more in cost than a decent conceala2

The Geberits have there own fixings and can be fixed to a wall with 2 fixings

Framed cisterns are for wall hung WCs and not back to wall WCs

Wow cheers guys!! I have been looking at the Geberit as we have gone for Geberit shower and bath wastes due to their quality :)

Thanks for answering my query - it has been bugging the hell out of me. We are going to box in the cistern and waste and put storage in the gaps that don't have waste or cisterns in :)

Knew this would be the right place to come :)
