Lost sound on computer?

I don't normally have the sound on my computer unless I look at a you-tube etc. It was working a few days ago, but I noticed yesterday it was absent. There is a scroll button at the base of the screen which is volume but this has no effect. I'm wondering if I have inadvertantly clicked on something. Can anyone lead me in the right direction to get it working again please?

  • Go to control panel. Select Sound and Audio Devices. Click the audio tab. Click on the volume button. Make sure the mute isn't ticked.

Hi, no luck so far. I have windows'98SE incidently.

I went to My Computer > Control Panel > Sounds which lead me to a box of "events" which gave me no opportunity to clic on audio and vol.

    Did I misunderstand you ?

Or just left click the speaker icon in the system tray next to the PCs clock :)

Starting Device Manager with a Mouse
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
    3. Click the Device Manager tab.

Starting Device Manager with the Keyboard
    1. Press and hold the CTRL key while you press the ESC key.
    2. Press the UP ARROW key to select Settings.
    3. Press the RIGHT ARROW key to select Control Panel, and then press ENTER.
    4. Use the arrow keys to select the System icon, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: If you do not see the System icon in Control Panel, select the View all the Control Panel icons setting on the left side of the Control Panel Window.
    5. Press RIGHT ARROW to select the Device Manager tab.
    6. Use the TAB key to select items in Device Manager.

Now whilst in device manager look under audio properties and see if you have any yellow or red exclamation marks as that will mean their is a problem with the sound driver and it will need reinstalling, also check all of your audio connections.

A problem would look like the image below (yellow exclamation mark) but for you it would be under sound video and game controllers.
