Several folk have already said wearing jeans indicates a different type of person to the one who thinks to wear trousers. I think the more recent posts just prove that theory correct.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

They won't say anything but they will notice the one who is smart compared with the rest who are not.

lol well none of us 4 were dressed smart, maybe they were lax about it, I wasnt saying the OP's son should go smart i was just passing on my experience.
  • I'm an X Sainsbury's duty manager. Induction day or not I would send you home wearing jeans and trainers. Its black bottoms and shoes certainly no trainers. The posters that mentioned being looked at even on your first day with the view of management training and very right also. I started on the tills myself and worked my way up having 2 of my children along the way.
Mad Mum to 3 wonderful children, 2 foster kittens and 2 big fat cats that never made it to a new home!
Aiming to loose 56 pounds this year. Total to date 44.5 pounds 12.5 to go. Slimming World Rocks!

Yes, its me, the original poster ....

I have read all your comments with great interest, but at the end of the day, my son went along to his actual interview in Jeans, Smart Jumper and New trainers ... This was because the interviewer gave him only 2 hours notice of the interview, and at that time he didn't have any dark trousers, shoes or shirt in his wardrobe that he could wear.

Anyway, my son is a very decent lad indeed, and even though he was dressed casually, he got the job because I think the interviewer could see past his attire, and he was actually told that "they could see something in him that was good" So I guess there is this to consider too.
Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.

Well maybe i was wrong and only time will tell if it turns out to be a bad decision or not. OP im glad your son was succesful at the interview despite in jeans etc, passing the dvd questions helped as well(although im not sure you can actually fail them) and I hope your son enjoys his time at the store. He has just missed pay day but its only 4 weeks till the next 1.

    Hi Jaqui

We aren't saying that wearing jeans is bad; just that wearing smart trousers will mean that he presents better than someone turning up in jeans. It gets noticed; and makes a difference; otherwise why even ask [asking confirms that it makes a difference].
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I asked, because he is an 18 year old self conscious lad who doesn't particularly want to dress up (its just not him) ... I thought he should definitely go in trousers, shirt and shoes, and thankfully the general consensus on the thread thought he should go smart too, so he has decided to do just that, which im really pleased about ... Have to say though, I have a lot of respect for his interviewer being able to see past his casual attire at interview, and see beneath the promising young lad that he is!

As a jeanswearer out of work I'd say yes I agree. To me they are casual and not the same as work/office trousers.

If unsure and was unable to ask, I would always overdress - it is much easier to dress down than up!
  • I was just having coffee with the OH's dad, and he said that the OH's nephew was lucky to get the extremely good job of surveyor that he did - co-incidentally his mum made him wear a suit and everyone else turned up in jeans. For a surveyor's job. It's not like it was shelf-stacking....unbelieveable.

He's now having a grand time going all over the country surveying and staying away all the time. Loves it.
