I work in a call centre part time for a bank and often we have people phone up to see if they can get an overdraft, more often than not they cannot have one and people are usually extremely snotty, rude and even abusive when i tell them they can't even when i try to be as nice as possible and explain why it might be.

What exactly are you suggesting it might be? Have you thought of getting in first with a new spiel something like"Nah, I wouldn't take it personally, mate, hardly anyone gets one, it's just that none of the soddin' banks will play the game - another 75 billion today handed to them on a plate and still they won't even lend on a measly overdraft - here's the email address of the CEO , and here's the telephone number of his PA. I hope you tell them just how depressing it is to be on the receiving end of this cr*p and while you're at it tell them that it is depressing the hell out of the staff who get paid to spout it."Just a thought ...0

I've worked for many a financial institution over the years, had to develop a thick skin, folk can't help themselves if they don't get their own way the abuse i've had over the years there's no excuse. They should try a day working for a bank and see how they like it!0

It's ridiculous, that I pay for my account but I can't get an overdraft over a tenner, yet they'd give me a credit card, which is more likely to mess my life up if I abuse it.
It's ridiculous. That's why. You can't agree with a banks ethics.0 -
It may be, but does it justify being rude, their a business they'll do what makes them the most money, one thing i do hope will come out of this is that we'll stop relying so heavily on credit in the future and people get back to basics on their spending habits.0

Why should I treat a company or its workers with respect, when they work under ridiculous ethics?
Where is it reasonable to give me a card with an £800 limit, rather than an overdraft for £100. It's crazy. By working for them, you endorse their ethics in my opinion. There's always a way to buck the system and help the customer out, but precious few staff do it.0 -
It's not the fault of the people who work in the bank call centres, they are just doing what the banks tell them to in order to make their living.
Much as I like post 2, I would say that was a sure fire way of getting the sack if that call was monitored or recorded.
Give them a break.0 -

I'd be more inclined to tell the customer "Well what do you expect? You're average balance is under £10, you keep incurring charges, you put !!!!!! all through the account - you clearly can't manage your money and / or are really poor. If you want to be considered for lending, prove to us that you can be trusted and can afford one.
Right now your account score sucks. And that explains why you feel you need an overdraft. If you managed your money properly, you wouldn't need an overdraft. Sure, we might've set one up for you before the crash, but chances are you'd have defaulted and we'd have lost our money.
So that's your reason, Sir. Anything else I can do for you?"Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

why do people get so offended and angry when i tell them they can't have an overdraft ?
Because they are ALREADY overdrawn, broke and desperate.
They do the obvious right thing and ring the bank asking for some kind of help.
The bank, then responds by offering them no help at all and "charging" them for the fact that they are in difficulties.
OR
The bank tries to SELL them something like a loan or credit card that will ultimately make more money for the bank.
Thats why they get offended.“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -

and by still having an account with them, you're also endorsing their ethics.
And why should you treat the staff with respect? well, maybe if you did they'd be nicer to you when you wanted something and would 'buck the system'. You can't expect people to help you out if you give them grief.0 -
The fact is people think they have a right to everything on offer.....
and as a previous poster said, the person, is broke and desperate already.
Ive worked for a bank and a utility company, however i take no !!!!!!.
The customer shows me no respect they dont get to speak to me for too long.
I am there to help, not be abused. I would say i go the extra mile whereever i can with the limitations of my job.
If they raise their voice, shout or swear, they get one warning, the second warning is the line going dead.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0
