Picture on TV freezing when using external HD

Hi guys I’d appreciate some advice.
I have a Sony Bravia television, a Humax HDR-FOX T2 and an Iomega external hard drive on which I’ve stored a collection of my DVD’s and MP3 music files. The Iomega sites states that: ‘The Iomega HDD External Hard Drive is PC formatted with FAT 32 to give the drive greater exchangeability between different operating systems.’
Now the problem is that sometimes – not always – I’m maybe five or ten minutes into a film when the picture freezes and to get anything to work I have to turn off the HD and turn it back on again, fast forward the film to where it froze and everything seems to work fine! The HD is connected to the Humax via USB
As you’ll appreciate it’s a bit of a nuisance and I’m just wondering what’s happening and what can I do about it?
While on the topic I’ve tried to connect the HD directly to the television via the USB connection and while the name of the folder is there open it and I get the message: ‘there are no items to display.’ There are of course items to dispaly for I can view them when I connect via the Humax or via my computer.
I can see the names of MP3 music files that I’ve saved but again try to play them and I get the no items to display message. Most confusing!
Any ideas? As always you advice is greatly welcomed.
