Totally understand and agree with you, few shops i avoid as similar problem's
Those box cam are pretty good, change the lens to suit your needs, especially if you need good optical zoom. With a good enclosure with blower and heater.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
May as well say i do work at Maplin and have sold a lot of CCTV system's. There are plenty of on-line site's which may offer better deals or prices. That's the reason i posted those links as i knew instantly about them.
The swann DVR are pretty good, cameras are 1/4 CCD, you can get better, but obviously the price does tend to up. They are 480 TVL, refers to resolution which are good, again you can get higher. If you had 4 cameras on 1TB at 50fps on continuous record, be looking at 100 days recording. And if you use continuous , when it gets to maximum capacity it loops back to beginning and records over itself.
They won't come with any balun's, you would have to buy them seperate, just make sure you get the right ones, most won't carry power just the picture.

What type of monitor or TV would you use, as you may need to get an adaptor as well to connect to DVR box, as they use BNC connector or they do have VGA connection, so if u have a spare monitor then that will plug straight in. But if using TV, then a BNC to phono connector would be needed.
Hi - apologies for jumping in on this thread - I'm also looking into getting security cameras for my house and your answers are really helpful. I was already thinking of using Maplin because they do the kits and they seem a good price.
I hope you don't mind me asking, have you seen the picture quality of the PRO-560 CCD cameras (the cameras in the 1TB kit)? I know it says they are professional so I'm guessing they are good.
Would I be right in thinking that they don't record sound, just visual? Is it possible to record sound?
As you can guess I know little about these kits. Would you advise an experienced hand to set these up or is it straight-forward?
Thanks!0 -
Not seen the picture quality of the 560 cam myself, from what i have heard they are a good camera. Have 480TVL which for the price is good, has 3.6mm lens, which is classed as wide angle. It all depends on what you require the camera's for, cover a wide area or specific parts of an area.
They don't record sound, not that many camera's come with audio. The DVR unit in the 1 TB kit, does have 1 audio input so you can have a single microphone input. Audio recording is a huge grey area, there was a guideline set up about 3 years ago mainly for business and street CCTV where they stated that audio conversation must not be recorded. But for private use, there is no straight answer.
Most kits are aimed at self-install, all depends on how confident you feel in installing yourself. Hardest part is placing the cameras and routing the cables.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
Hi Guys,
What does everyone think of this camera then? My electrician has given me some good feedback and info (not necessarily pushing this on me), but echoes some of the stuff I have read.
Opinions greatly appreciated.

Looks a good camera, 0 lux so give good night vision. 1/3 sony, good as well. Only thing I would worry about is 420tvl on 3.6mm lens, if identifying someone is a must then you may struggle. The next on that list will better quality 480tvl on 4mm lens, higher quality on a slightly narrower field of vision.
It looks a lot like an addonics camera, but then again a lot of the cameras and cctv equipment are made by the same manufacture, bought and branded by whoever buy with there own branding.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

Hi typeractive, I've now bought the 480TVL cameras (part of the 1TB kit), I've tested them inside and the quality looks good to me, close-up especially. The night vision is good too. I'm yet to test outside but should be setting them up this weekend.0 -
Hey guys - thanks very much!!! I'm going to spend some time looking around I think.
jlajla any chance of some footage sharing / pics? Maybe at night / during day sort of stuff? No immediate rush. My electrician's friend (who is a CCTV guy) has been very nice and recommended my finishing up is a DIY job to save me money, though has offered to check any links to stuff etc I send him. Quite nice of him. Also I have neil on here!!

I have been looking at the kits on maplin website for ages, the only thing that has stopped me buying a kit is that I dont want to get it home and find its rubbish quality pic!
Could you share some day and night pics from your cctv system?
thanks0 -
My cameras are up and running now and set to motion detect. Though the tree at the back seems to keep setting it off. Guess I just need to alter the sensitivity. Setting them up was pretty easy (crawling about in the attic though was not! So unfit!
)
The image quality is good enough for me, all things are distinguishable. Day image quality does seem better than night, but saying that the night infra-red is still pretty good.
For the price and that everything you need is included in the kit, and that it's doddle to set up (fitness depending!) - I'd definitely recommend it.

im a bit worried about the fire risk of setting it up in the loft, might see if i can get some sort of "box" for it0
