Competitions- open to scams?

Options
Please move this if its in the wrong place - since beginning of jan I have been entering into comps on internet, filling in all my house/tel no. details. using loquax.

I received a telephone call this morning at 4.30am - it was the automated reverse charge phone call asking if I would accept a reverse charge phone call from .....and then the person didn't leave their name - I have never had a dodgy phone call before and I am wondering whether it is because I have had to leave my phone details in some of these competitions....

I just hung up in case it was a scam where I would be charged loads over the phone - has this happened to anyone else?

It's happened once a long time ago but never at 4.30am. I had a phonecall from a scammer a couple of nights ago saying I had "won" a holiday for a booking fee of £199. I just said no thanks and put the phone down. I always put my home number on the comps and only get a scam phonecall about once every 3 months or so. However, I have had lots of calls telling me I've won so it is worth putting your number on.

I had a phone call just after 4 am. I did a 1471, and got 01948841240 - I use my home number & have not had many calls. I'm going on the phone forum now to see if someone can find out whose number that is now.
  • I only ever use my mobile number for the reason of getting dodgy calls in the early hours of the morning.

It was ****** annoying, as I don't sleep particularly well. I usually have an answerphone on, but its kaput at the moment, so probably get another quicker than I intended if I get any more.
  • my nan got one of those "reverse charge calls" in the early hours of the morning ... being one of lifes "someone could need help" people ... she excepted the reverse charge ... only to listen to a guy saying ... "am outside ur window with a knife and watching u and gona ... blah blah" .. my nan lives alone and was in pieces .. she didnt know about all the "prank recordings" that are available now a days ... how much did she pay for this wonderful experience? ..... £5!

I always give my mobile number. In nearly a year of comping only ever had 2 calls, one to say I'd won, and the other was from a book company. Just told them it was not convenient to ring during the day as I was at work, they never rang again.

Oh my gosh, how absolutely terrifying, your poor nan. :(

The problem is - if you use an old mobile phone number if they ring you, you won't get the message and forfeit the prize. Even for small prize wins you can get a phone call. I had one before Christmas for a piece of jewelery, and there was one yesterday which my DD answered asking to confirm address, to send prize.

I haven't yet won anything but I give my mobile number. However if I did win and i didn't answer the phone, wouldn't the company leave a message?
