Hubby is off to Stuttgart to collect a car. We are going to make a break of it and have four nights to make our way back to Calais.
Any suggestions which route to take/where to stay and visit?

I have done this route many times - on the way to Austria.
Calais Dunkirk Lille Mons Namur Luxembourg Metz Forbach Neunkirchen Ludwigshafen Speyer Heilbronn Stuttgatt
There is a small piece of toll motorway between Metz and Forbach. The rest of French motorways are free, as well as those in Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Remember to fill up with cheap fuel in Luxembourg.
Where to stay is really a preference on which country you prefer - since this route is never far from a border.0 -
Spend two nights in the Black Forest which is very nice, then take the A5 and A61 north to Koblenz. Leave the motorway and take the B9 up the rhine valley, staying somewhere like Bad Breisig for two nights. Spend day 3 touring the Mosel. On day 4 drive up the B9 to Bad Godesberg then rejoin the A61 and drive via Aachen to Calais.

Luxembourg not only has cheap fuel but cheap booz and fags. There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0

If you live in the north you could consider the Rotterdam-Hull ferry, this'll save you 300-400 miles driving. We went this route this summer, really impressed by the ship, cabin, food etc, like a mini-cruise, great way to end our holiday.0
