Does anyone have any idea roughly what it would cost to have the brakes done on a Ford Ka?.

Its an old P reg so wondering if its a case of 'just scap it' and look for something else.

Its my nieces car and shes just been to visit and told me that she can hear a scraping noise. Ive just moved it about ten yards and the brakes are down to bare metal and making a hell of a noise and the numpty is still driving it. If its going to be very costly Im going to help her out a bit but havnt told her yet. The thing is though, I dont see the point if the job is going to cost more than the car is worth.

Do you mean the pads need replacing? If so these are cheap (you'll get a set for about 12-15 quid per axle).

Even if the discs need done too you won't be looking at much of a bill. Can you do these yourself? If not then it's only an hours labour for a mechanic - find a reasonable garage and you won't pay much. It might still be worth more than the car though depending how bad it is :p

If you can't do the job yourself, do you have a college nearby.
Lots of places that do training whether it be hairdressing; car repairs; or brick laying are looking for guinea pigs to practise on. They wouldn't let a beginner on a 'real' car but one of the more experienced trainees with the instructor standing watching may be given a proper job to do.

Pads about a tenner, discs about £20, an hour to fit.

If it has long MOT and tax, get the pads changed. I'm amazed though that there are any original KAs still running around that havent rusted to dust.
