Hello All

Options
I'm currently looking to purchase new venetian blinds for my house and I'll be needing 10 blinds in total.

The problem is that none of the window recesses are standard sizes i.e bedroom window measures 88 1/2cm - the closest standard size to this being 90cm which is 15mm too wide.

All windows are 15-20mm short of standard 60, 90, 120cm etc.

I know i could mount blinds outside of recess but I really want them inside as I think it's a lot neater looking.

I'm really loathed to pay 30 quid for a made to measure blind which is 15 mm shorter than a 90cm blind I can pick up from B&Q for less than a tenner. Paying more for less blind technically I know lol:)

Can anybody recommend a good blind supplier with reasonable prices and reliable service??

((Not Hilary's Blinds who wanted 50 quid for a 88cm blind))

Many thanks folks:)

you wont get made to measure (venetian) blinds for the same price as BQ stock sizes.

the plain blinds are easy to trim down to your own size.

  • I've always bought my blinds from blinds4sale, they've been going years, are really helpful on the phone, deliver when they say they will and the blinds are fantastic quality. I've got some in my living room that I've had for over 8 years (since I first moved in) and they still look great and operate like they did the first day I put them up. As long as you're not bad with a screwdriver (only a couple of screws per blind) and can read a tape measure you'll have no problem. It's all well and good buying them when you have to cut them down but in my experience they tend to fray, look a bit DIY and don't last very long. If you pay a bit extra and have them made to your exact measurements then they'll still be looking great and working great years down the line. My mum always says 'buy cheap buy twice'!

Venetian blinds are easy to cut down to size. B&Q used to offer it as a service if you went in with dimensions. Ikea sell a little cutter which you use to cut and shape each slat individually - as do Dunhelm Mill - Fiddly but not difficult.

  • I have tried IKEA wooden blinds before but the slat broke, the cord came apart (the outer fabric came away from the inner string and got caught up in the locking mechanism in the top of the blind) - total disaster. Cheap price and cheap product! This was about 10 years ago so maybe they've improved their quality since but I doubt it. I bought 6 of them to go round a bay and they looked awful, I threw them away after a year!
  • Web-blinds is Hilarys - they're the same company, Hillary's is just the part of the company that actually comes to your house and measures and fits for you, web-blinds are the part that just sell online and you have to measure and fit yourself - same rubbish quality. I tried them too, bought one blind just to see the quality (a small one for my downstairs toilet) and it was shocking, so was their customer service too.

We have an Ikea wooden venetian blind in our hall as the window is very tall and skinny and it was the only place that sold anytihng like the right size. It has been there since we moved in (10 years) and still looks great, works fine, but as has been previously said, is a pain to clean. Luckily most of it is out of eye line....!

    What about vertical blinds?

We had ours done by a local supplier, yes they are a bit mor expensive, but they fit and look smarter IMO, easier to keep clean too.

As MRSVA says if you are not careful cutting premade ones to fit they quickly look tired.
