How long should webpage take to update?

Bet someone on here can give me the answer to this in seconds and I've just spent an hour googling and can't get a straight answer. I am building a website using Webeasy8. It's bog standard and at the moment just concentrating on getting the first page up so as at least we have some sort of presence on the internet. I published the first page last night and it has gone live and is all good. I've gone in an hour ago to make some changes and although it's changed in Webeasy it's not showing the changes on Google. How long does it take from when you make changes, to the changes showing on the internet.
Please be gentle with me I'm rubbish with techy stuff and just taking lots of little steps:o determind to get there eventually.

    Er, Google isn't the internet.

Is the updated page showing when you go directly to the site's url (https://www.yoursite-etc-etc...)? If not press Control and F5 to clear your cache (on a windows PC).

Hi Pete, No it's not showing when I type in the URl either, tried F5 again but I had already cleared the cache. Could it be that I have'nt updated it right in webeasy, although the page is showing perfectly in there? Should changes be immediate once I've made them or do they take a while to update? tia

  • It depends....

I assume that Webeasy8 is desktop software your using to create your site? If it is then once you've updated it on your desktop you would then have to upload it to your webserver and unless WebEasy8 is something that is also installed on the webserver then the changes should happen almost instantly.

If it is some form of web based solution instead then there is the potential for caching to be going on in the server itself but again I'd expect that to be a matter of minutes or at home an hour though in theory it could be any length of time. With a web based solution you generally have to promote it to live as well so that you can work on the site but not make it visible to the outside world until your ready, useful if changing interlinked pages.

Thank you, it is desktop software so it should then be quite quick. Back to webeasy to see what I've done wrong:( because I've updated it and uploaded it and obviously missed something somewhere. I was concerned because if it takes hours for each change to go through, I had visions of it taking me forever!

  • Make sure all the obvious things, you've uploaded the right version, stored it in the right folder, called it what you think you've called it etc etc etc
  • If it is a new website then Google will only spider your website periodically. Sites such as the BBC, CNN, etc that are highly respected and updated regularly will be spidered every few seconds but other sites, such as small business sites and personal blogs, will only be spidered once every few days, or even once every few weeks.

The more content you put on site, the more authority it gains and the more prominance it gains, the more frequently the Google will crawl it for new content.

How quick your changes show up in Google depends on how often Google visits your site. Some sites will get visited daily = google search results for your site updated daily. Other sites may only get visited weekly or monthly.
Provided you have updated your site properly, the changes should normally show immediately.

I haven't had much to do with web design and nor have I used Webeasy, but some of the content-management and web-design software I've used doesn't automatically upload changes you make to your web server. The last software I used would show you a "preview" of any changes from within the software, then you could either publish the changes to a staging server that certain people can access to test the site, or you could make the changes "live" by publishing them to your actual web server.

Maybe you just need to tell Webeasy to upload the latest version of the web pages...?

Once the new pages are on your server, assuming you're not caching content anywhere you should see the new pages immediately (or within a minute, at least).

Thanks everyone, it has worked now, redid everything I'd done and relooked at the manual I'm using and it's all ok. Think I must have just missed out something daft, not sure what but sometimes someone telling you to recheck works;) And now I know that if it doesnt work within a few minutes I've done something wrong, off to play some more now...
