Student loan overpayment from 2002

I have been contacted about an overpayment from 2001 - 2002 of £2400 from my student grant. I have been repaying my student loan up until last year which was taken directly from my wage. I am now only earning about 10k so not paying that.
They are demanding that the full payment of the overpayed grant be payed in full, I cannot afford that as I am really struggling to pay my basic bills at the moment.
Is this debt of an overpayment payable as it is nearly 10 years old, or does the fact that my student loan payments coming from my wage mean I have been paying them, and therefore the 6 year rule is not relevant?

Grants were not that high then, so I'm guessing it's actually the loan that was overpaid. Need a lot more information than you've posted I'm afraid, such as whether was income-contingent or mortgage style, exactly why it is there, and study patterns.
May well be the case that they can reclaim at any point.0 -
I was a single parent at the time, living in a rented property. I did a full time HND at a local college. I received a standard student loan and a standard student grant. I really do not know why there was an overpayment, it has not been explained to me. The outstanding overpayment is in respect to the standard grant and relates to 1999/2000. I was payed the same standard student loan and standard student grant again for the 2000/2001 term (2nd year of HND) and there is no overpayment for this term.0

Had you studied at this level before?0

Will look at it, but I need to find myself a copy of the 1999 regs. Probably have them in the office somewhere still.
To think, people mocked me when I refused to clear out the old stuff.0 -
No this was the first time at college after 20 years of full time employment0
