Updating Firefox

I am using an old version, 3.0.9, and I have decided to update after seeng a message on the Paypal website that the version I am using is insecure. I tried to update by using the Check gfor Updates in the Help section, I was told there was a 3.6 something available, but it failed to update. there was a link to the mozilla website for the latest version 7, but I am wondering how to apply it. Do I need to uninstall my current version, or do I just open the new set up exe?

I am using Windows XP Home Edition.

I would use Mozbackup and backup your bookmarks and passwords, but not anything else:

Then uninstall Firefox 3. After you install Firefox 7, make a new profile, then restore the bookmarks and passwords with Mozbackup.

Also then put your extensions back in. The reason I suggest it this way is that it'll help to prevent strange profile problems that cause slowness.
