Personally I am not sure if it is a good idea NOT to tell her you feeding the cat.

She may think that what she feeds is enough - as cat does not look hungry - and fail to make any effort of getting more food.

I would tell her and say it is a temporary situation and that you can only do it for a week or so - making it very clear to her.

Or feed the cats and pass the receipts to her.

If you feed the cat and she is not aware of it - she will assume cat is ok, does not need more than what she gives and never make any effort.

I can see this point of view aswell, i am thinking that at least with the op feeding on the quiet, the poor cat is no longer hungry...

Sure - but OP is not in a position to feed the poor creature and gets herself into more financial worry doing that.

Meanwhile the flatmate thinks all is good...

And yes, I know - the poor cat is stuck.

Ah I hadn't thought of that. The cat had been doing the "I'm starving" pur for about 5 days. When she's hungry she's overly affectionate, she was back to being a "I'll let you pet me when I want to be petted" cat this morning.
I'm out this evening and most of the weekend so can't feed it then anyway, so will see what it is like after the weekend. Hopefully my housemate will have been paid or at least fed the cat properly.

Another thought - the cat may just chance it.

Do you actually KNOW how much/how often does the owner feed her cat?

I say about chancing it as one of mine, Fred will beg for food 24/7 and literally jump in the fridge when I open it - and believe me, Fred is NOT hungry, can nt possibly be with the amount of food that greedy tabby eats...

Cats are funny like that sometimes....
  • Ah my parents cat does that, massive fluffy pedigree persian yowls all day long to be fed. But my housemates cat only ate half the sheba yesterday then came back for the rest this morning. She didn't make any fuss this morning, no "I'm hungry" purrs. So it was definitely that she was hungry rather than being cheeky. She's also stopped following me around the room constantly as well.
If you've seen Simons Cat, then she was doing the morning bed routine on Monday morning to me.

  • Cat has decided I equal food. Simons cat episode cat man do from her, so I get her some dried food which she ate all of.no idea if she's been fed this evening definitely wasn't by my housemate this morning. She's now happily asleep on my bed and she purred and asked for a fuss after eating, I'm guessing her way of saying thank you.

And I am guessing you got yourself promoted to a cat slave ;)

Enjoy.... I got 4 my own, my daughter got 2 and also Lucy, homelsss baby cat who herself was pregnant and presented my daughter with 6 beautiful tabby babies last night ;)
  • I saw they're gorgeous. If only I had a garden I'd be after 2. If I can help with her in anyway then let me know. Even if it's just sending a box of whiskers, which I've learnt are £1.50 downstairs :-)
