Insurance legislation

My elderly father has taken out 8 seperate insurance policies for his sky equipment.
I have been trying to reclaim the money for the 7 he doesn't need and someone has told me that there is legislation in place which says the insurance companies have to check if cover is already in place before they try and sell any. Is this true? Does anyone know what the legislation is?
Any help gratefully recieved.

    Sorry, not aware of any such legislation. Can't think how they could check either.

    I can't think of anything in law which prevents a company selling its product without checking an applicant's current arrangements. In an advised sale, I'd be expected to analyse the customer's circumstances and recommend according to their needs and current plans but these will certainly not be advised sales.

  • No, no law and no facility to check anyway.

    Most sellers of insurance are none advisory in that they cannot recommend anything or tell the customer what they need etc but simply state the benefits of the policy and leave the customer to decide if they want it or not.

    As already advised this is not true.

    But why not try for the goodwill of these 7 (send them copies of all the policies he has taken out, pointing out he is confused and ask them to cancel and do refunds).

    (And consider getting a POA!)
