If you think you are going to do more miles than you agreed, you are supposed to contact your insurer before you exceed the limit and ask them to increase it.

It depends how long it takes you to replace the broken speedometer cable. :)

If your circumstances change so that you are doing significantly more mileage then you need to contact your insurer about your current policy and get it amended.
The insurer prices the policy on the facts given to them and if any of those change you need to get the policy amended (and if necessary pay more premium and admin fee).

    Is this just short term?
You are not expected to monitor your mileage, so if it's short term and is only going to be a few hundred then personally I wouldn't bother.
If it's a long term change and is likely to result in thousands of extra miles then you need to inform your insurer now.

    Poor advice!

Of course you have to monitor the mileage with a limited mileage policy!
