Sim Card Query

My phone is faulty so I am buying a new one.
I want to keep my old number and there is money on my Pay as you go.
Do I put the new Sim Card in or use my old one?
Thank you.

some stores allow you to assign the credit to your old sim instead of the new one

So if I put my old sim in the new phone will the money still be there and what do I do with the new sim?
