I Need some serious Kenwood Help

Options
I love my Kenwood, it's all bright and shiny and new (I've had it 6 months) and that is the way it is going to stay if I don't learn how to use it properly.

So far all I have used it for is making mashed potato and butter, the problem is I can never work out which of the attachments I should be using for which job. The instructions I followed for making the butter said use the balloon whisk but all that did was fill the whole middle of the whisk up with semi solid cream, in the end I switched over to the K beater and that did the job.

I want to be able to make pastry and dough and do lots of other things but which of the 3 standard attachments works for which job?

I've only had my chef for a short while too. So far, the only thing I have successfully used the balloon whisk for is to whip up egg whites for a meringue. Also have used dough hook lots of times for, well, dough! ;) for breadmaking. I used to do both of these by hand but can safely say that the Chef makes a much better job of both as well as being less tiring on the arms. I agree the K beater for butter and mashed potatoes. I also use the K beater for mixing cakes. I haven't used the Chef for anything else yet, will be interested in the replies to this thread!
  • I use:

K beater for pastry and the dough hook for bread like dough. Its a while since I made bread dough with a mixer though, now at uni I dont have access to a mixer, but its really easy to make dough without a mixer.

Thanks all, I shall be doing a fair bit of experimenting today as the kitchen is the only place DH isn't hunting for his lost music.

As others have said i use the K beater for everything except whipping cream (balloon whisk), egg whites ( balloon whisk) and bread dough (dough hook).

If you had the colander and seive attachment you could use it to make really nice fruit purees - say to use as fools, in HM yoghurt (like a much cheaper fruit corner) or in making jam. My family used to love apple and blackberry crumble but were all silly about the pips, so I'd stew the fruit then seive it and then turn the fruit sludge into the crumble bottom. I usd it a lot for veg purees when children small and fussy, but noiw I suppose we're all supposed to eat all that spare fibre aren't we !

Moggins - did you get the copy of the KitchenAid manual I posted recently? The instructions are much more comprehensive than for the Kenwood and explains about each tool. Recipes are much better, too. :)

I haven't seen that? I must have been having an off day!
