Car Warranty not paying full amount
Options
I'm after a bit of advice please for my BIL.
He bought a BMW in February of this year, its second hand but the warranty is still in date. He felt that something was wrong with it the other day and took it to a local garage who said that they were not willing to do any work on it as there was too much wrong with it. He then took it to a BMW garage who have now confirmed that the car needs a new engine and have quoted a figure of £11,500 (I think £5,000 for the engine and the rest must be labour!!).
They have today heard back from the warranty providers who have stated that they will only pay out a maximum of £2000 even though it is agreed that it is a mechanical fault and not wear and tear.
My BIL paid £11,000 for this car so is not prepared to pay the £9,000 odd difference.
Can the people providing the warranty put a cap on the amount they will pay out or are they entilted to pay for any repairs to make the car roadworthy again.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

How old is this car?
Presume its an after market warranty if so what does the policy document say? they can set the claim limit at any level they like.0 -
Was it bought from a BMW dealer, and is it a BMW warranty? £2k doesn't get you very much when you need a new engine.
Sounds like he might be best looking for a second hand engine. Or speaking to a member of FER (Federation of Engine Remanufacturers) for a quote to strip/rebore/rebuild his existing one0 -

Aftermarket warranties are generally not worth a whole lot - at least not the ones put on cars by car dealers.
Chances are yes, there is a claim limit but it will be in the paperwork.0 -
What kind of fault is it? Is it a common fault with this vehicle? Have a good scout around the web, and see if you can find anything.0

No?! Not the engine ingesting the swirl flaps from the inlet manifold... is that a real thing?
I was just wondering if it's a common problem that BMW are maybe dealing with? Worth searching for on the web? Or checking with VOSA?

Its a real problem, yes.
Prevention = £150. Cure = £thousands.
BMW know about it, but as it generally happens well out of warranty, they're not feeling any real obligation to do anything about it.0 -

www.bimmerforums.co.uk as well. Might get some help on there.
for others looking - always ask if there is a limit to the warranty. We were sold a 'approved used' Ford and the warranty for soem reason was third party. Until we asked about the limit (£2000) we weren't told and it took some complaining to get one that would actually cover a new engine/autobox etc.
5t.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Only affects diesels then?0
