Annual Car Insurance Renewal Tricks

Hi guys,

Not entirely sure where to put this post, so please do move it if there's somewhere better.

Thought I'd share with you my techniques for cheapest car insurance.

1. Get your renewal quote - either in writing or over the phone if they're cheeky and leave it to the last minute before sending it out.

2. Run the comparisons & call the big companies who aren't on the comparison sites.

3. Call your insurer with your 'best price' from a competitor. My insurance is generally around the £2-300 mark so I normally take my best price, even if that is my renewal figure, and take £20 off, saying that the other cheapest listed on the comparisons site is offering that price.

They usually will do a deal with you. LV are my current insurer and just for calling and being connected to the 'i'm considering leaving department' I saved an additional £15 on what was already the cheapest price for me.

I do this every year and always manage to squeeze a little off of the price. Hope this helps somebody else. I do the same for mobile phone contracts too, always getting a better deal than published rates.

i've being doing this for some while and more recently, have been coming across insurers that are becoming wise to these tricks - so got to be careful on how demanding you are. especially those who don't work on good commission

Tried that with Churchill, I didn't quote a price just asked them to reduce their renewal price, and they said they couldn't. So I walked.

I tried it with Endsleigh before now and they also said that they couldn't go any lower (once I ceased to be a student I suppose).

This year Tesco (current insurer) have said £1000, Aviva have said £650 - somehow I don't expect Tesco to match that, but I'll give them the chance anyway. :p

I renewed on sunday ... my insurer swift cover emailed me with a renewal quote that was waaaaaaaay over board IMO..

last year £336, this year £578.... i hit the comparison sites, best price i got was £329 BUT the excess was massive and i has never heard of the insurer... i then phoned swift cover to try and get a better deal... they just were not having any of it... i told them i would not be renewing...

life got in the way and before i knew it i had an email thanking me for my custom wnd here is your proof of NCD and did i know under new legislation they were obliged to notify the thought police i was not insured...

i went back to the comparisons to revisit the quotes... all expired.. i hit the refresh button and expected that because of the urgency i would be raped and pillaged...

the cheapest insurance ??? swift cover at £330 !!!!!

    bandits the lot of em

remember as well that compariosn sites lets the insurers see the other prices.....

when getting a quote and ringing up your insurer you got to have a like for like quote.

if you have a £100 excess, you cant ring u saying i got one cheaper by 40% whenever that quote had a £300 excess.

the guys on the other end know exactly what the other companies quot and with what type of excess.....

i work on a retention line, and all too often people ring me up quoting price 50% less..... i have to point out that prices carries a £50 excess, but some people are too oblivious to figure out why its cheaper..... wejust see £signs, but people never look into why?
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?
