Bridesmaid dresses ?

Do you choose the dresses and your bridesmaids have to wear them?
Is it a joint decision, so they look their best?
What if one doesn't like what you choose?
I can see one of them (my sister and chief bridesmaid) moaning. Why change the habit of a lifetime :D

She saw a dress, more like a mother of the bride outfit or normal posh dress, in purple, with stripes. Not at all what I want.
She said she would have bought it there and then if she had the money.
Like I am supposed to let her wear what she wants!

I can see rows ahead

All three are on the cuddly side, so I want loose long maxi dresses. Then use accessories to bling them up. And add a bolero or wrap to cover up.
So they look and feel pretty and comfortable all day.

Certainly not purple stripes. I'll have to sack her :p

I think who choses depends on who pays a lot of the time. However I gave my BM quiet a lot of choice; all I said was it had to be grecian to go with my dress. I didn't mind colour or length etc. Then we went shopping together and she picked the one she liked. Her favourite was not my favourite but got the one she liked as she has to wear it.

Edit: We paid for her dress

I sympathise. :) however, your sister may surprise you. I refuse to go dress shopping with my sister, she I the worst, she looks fab but says she doesn't like every single one. She tries on around 20! (that's what it feels like!) however, I got her a bridesmaids dress, she said it's what you want, I want u to be happy. The other BMs... That's another story... Got 2nd BM dress, she said exactly the same.

If it comes to be too much hassle, just don't give them any choice, once bitten twice shy!

    Hi,

I'm paying for my bridesmaid dress & we are going shopping together. We are the same age but our taste do differ, however I have said to her that I want to get her something that she likes & that she can ware again. I do want people to know she is the bridesmaid so it will have to be a posher summer dress not something one of my guests might buy. If we find something that suits her & looks good then I will get it even if it's not what I would have choosen.

I think it's my job to pay for the dresses.

And I need to do it as cheap as possible. So I want to look online and find 3 nice but cheap dresses.
My own dress won't cost more than £200. If money wasn't a problem, I'd take all 3 bridesmaids to BHS or Debenhams and choos them together, but I have to be careful and get their sizes and try and find them myself.
Lucky i'm handy with a machine and can do alterations at home

I'm paying for my bridesmaids dresses, Im just going to have a look around for some and then give them the option: "Do you like/ look good in A, B, or C?"

I picked my bridesmaid dresses, got them all to try them on to make sure they all fitted and looked good etc, ended up buying maxi dresses from Quiz for £60 each

  • I've been a bridesmaid twice, and had more say in the dress when I was the only adult bridesmaid (the only remit was that it had to be turquoise blue to match the colour scheme) than when I was one of three bridesmaids, which is generally how it seems to go. I'm not planning to have any bridesmaids when I get married but I am going to ask my best mate to be 'best woman' and let her wear what she likes.

My parents paid for both my bridesmaids' dresses as I was a poor student at the time, although had they or my sisters asked me to contribute or even pay for the whole thing I would have done so quite happily.

What about maybe asking them to have a look through a site like Dessy http://www.dessy.com/ to get an idea of what shapes/lengths they like and then using that to help you start looking for something?

    Speak to your BMs.

Before even going shopping I asked mine what they liked style wise & colourwise.
Although I was paying, I didn't want to put them in anything they'd be uncomfortable in.

I went high street shop (Oasis) in the end for cheaper dresses that they could wear again.
  • When I was a bridesmaid the bride chose the colour but was flexible on the style. This was a few years ago when there wasn't so much choice though...

I am choosing my bm's dresses with a little help from them. I have a budget of £500 for the 3 dresses and due to my colour scheme I have found finding exactly what I am after a nightmare but we are getting there. We are going with either Alfred Angelo or Alfred Sung.
