LED PIR security lights - any experiences?

I'm looking at replacing a 500W, blindingly-bright, halogen PIR security light, and am wondering whether the LED versions are sophisticated enough and powerful enough yet for normal use.

The fluorescent versions, if like ordinary low-energy light bulbs, would take an age to produce any useful amount of light.

An LED security light is likely to be much more expensive to buy, but won't need the halogen bulbs to be replaced every so often on the eaves of the house, using a 5-metre ladder! And it ought to be cheaper to run (not that it will be on long).

Does anyone have any experience of LED PIR security lights, particularly regarding the brightness? Thanks!

I don't John (I'd be interested to here from anyone who does) but I was in a restaurant recently which was lit completely by GU10 downlighters, every one of which had the original halogen lamp replaced with an LED version and I was very impressed by the quality and quantity of light. The place was no darker or significantly differently lit than it used to be (we've been regulars for a while). Given that we have around 20 50W GU10 downighters in our house (two bloody kW!), I was quite heartened.

Interesting, but since the power supply is already there I was thinking of staying with mains-powered lights, not solar ones...

    Hi
Only yesterday we just took delivery of a 36W IP65 LED Flood light that we purchased from
    http://www.ledlights4you.co.uk/led-flood-lights/37-36w-floodlight-black.html
It came with a plug so we just plugged it in until we get our electrician.
It has a very strong build which is needed here as we are exposed to the mountain.

We live on a farm and this one is going to be used as a flood/security light for the farm yard. My husband was very sceptical about the price as he was comparing it with halogen lighting. We only ordered one...just incase it was all hype....smiles
But halogen lights are very expensive to run and this one is only 36W and it gives off amazing light. No warming up period....instant COOL WHITE light . NO Bulbs to replace and risking life and limb replacing, balanced on a ladder . He is so impresssed we are going to use more. And he has decided to buy others to light up the cow cubicle houses as these houses require lighting ALL night long.
And apparently you can fit them to a PIR device.

I can only imagine how bright the 72W type is.....

    We are impressed

By the way......we ordered the item in the evening of 4th Oct. and it arrived yesterday......6 Oct.!

They look very good if very expensive, with a ludicrous £18 delivery charge. And I can't find any address for this firm on their website, which is a bit worrying.

    Hi John
I actually found them on ebay.....http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310132586141?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_2689wt_944
Where the firms details are shown more clearly
But it was cheaper to buy it from their website and the delivery charge to here was £13 and Royal Mail Special Delivery was used. I think you add an additional £5 for each subsequent light ordered to cover postage.
We are registered for VAT so we can claim the VAT as a ligitimate business expense which reduces the cost.
And we paid using PAYPAL for added protection
Plus the fact we probably have larger areas to light up.

I only found one other firm selling a similiar item
    http://www.light-spark.co.uk/12-x-3-watt-36-watt---warm-white-6-p.asp

I just thought I would share my experience of this

By the way....I first heard of this LED floodlighting when I was told that our local electricity provider was offering a grant for "Commercial LED lighting" . They have a certain criteria for this type of lighting grant. I rang them to ask more and was told it is just 10% grant aid !!!.That would encourage no one to purchase such lighting. It would not be worth putting pen to paper to apply for it. They said they could not offer more as they "could not afford it". I think that offer of grant aid is insulting and I would not waste my time applying

Led floodlights are getting better, used to be pretty bad as they used standard 5mm low power LED. Always go with the super bright Cree or luxeon LED.

Yes they are expensive at the moment, but with time they will come down in price.

You could always try local shops, as there are some that do sell 50W led floodlights, some with 12 x 3w super bright led's or use a single 50W smd led.

Thanks, Clare. I have a found a German firm Steinel which produces high quality PIR LED Security Lighting, but the prices also are not cheap. There seem to be a few other firms, also...

LED technology has come a looong way since they were made. A 10W LED flood that uses COB instead of SMD will give about the same light output and you'll save yourself a fortune!!

I know Edmundson Electrical do a 10W AVA flood that's really good, although it's not online for some reason...
