So, please explain how you lost £2,200 with Swiftcover which you wouldn't have lost elsewhere?

Can I use my crystal ball and guess that you had an accident, but couldn't prove the third party responsible (or they weren't insured) so you lost your excess, and the amount Swiftcover paid out was a lot less than you believed the car was worth when it was written off?

I'd love to know. Please enlighten us! And welcome to MSE, by the way.
  • I'd like to know too as i was thinking about taking my next car insurance out with SwiftCover, as my insurance is up in February.

Ash has pm'd me some details and, to paraphrase:

    - he paid £3,000 to buy a car, and then spent £800 doing it up, and got offered its £1,600 value when it was written off
    - the third party did admit responsibility, so the loss of £2,200 represents just the shortfall in value.

There have been other posts on here about how to challenge your insurer's valuation of your car. If they won't budge and you have concrete evidence (i.e. comparables) then you should tell them you will take them to the Financial Ombudsman, and then do so.

Having said that, money you spend maintaining your car isn't going to be recoverable - that's life. And nor is a value which is over the odds in the first place, as it sounds like your car might have been.

If you tell us the make model year and mileage, we might have a view on this.
