Best way from north Cheshire to Narberth...?

Need to go to Narberth in a few weeks, but it could do with a motorway or some fast roads lol.
Looking on the google map it is suggesting I go towards Oswestry, welshpool, newtown, aberystwth and then drop down, but this looks depressing.
The M6 onto the M50, down to Newport and cross county is an extra 20 miles, but takes similar time to do.
Anyone got any suggestions? time of day isn't a big deal to be honest.

I like driving the mid wales roads, but then I am happy to overtake and generally make good progress.
But also it does get a bit of a PITA if you don't know the roads.
I would take the M50 route, then A40 then turn off the A40 to stay on the A40 towards Abergavenny (if you dont turn off it turns into the A449 to Newport) then take the A465 (Heads of the valley road) this is nearly all duel carriageway now and generally not busy as it was built with European money to regenerate the valleys, not because it was needed.
Then on the M4 at Neath, A48, A40 at Carmarthen Arrive.
With this you avoid the M4 at Cardiff and Newport with can be a bit busy (has variable speed control).0 -
Not familiar with Mid Wales roads but I'd agree with the above - the A465 is a good road and better than going towards Cardiff etc. - just be careful as one of the exits somewhere along the route can be hard to notice if it is dark so you'll need to keep an eye out or you'll end up on the A449 iirc - my father used to do Liverpool to Swansea a lot this way a few years ago0

We used to travel to Tenby from Birmingham for our holidays and found te best route to be the M50 - A40 - A465 to Neath - then the M4 - A48 to Carmarthen - A40 then takes you on towards Narberth. We tried other routes and found this to be the least busy and quite fast.0

I know Oswestry/Welshpool etc will be nice enough. but I do like motorways. But I also like decent A roads...0

Going down to Welshpool isn't too bad. Its single carriageway for a lot of it but the drivers around there like to get their foot down. From Welshpool onwards is a bit of a different story. Whilst the roads are absolutely beautiful scenery wise, they're not quick and have a fair amount of bends in them and, for A roads, are quite narrow in places.
To be honest it is swings and roundabouts. There is no right or wrong way and no way which will get you there quicker than the others and you need to decide whether you want scenic or motorway.0
