Insurance screw up

My friend needs some advice:
They had a house insurance policy with Hillhouse Hammond. Last year they were taken over by Towergate Strovers. He was sent a letter informing him he didn't need to to worry about the changeover and the policy would continue. However, recently he has discovered that in the changeover of companies they have failed to collect his direct debit for the past six months.
When he spoke on the phone, they said he has to pay these payments as they sent out a change of direct debit form - which he doesn't remember recieving.
What is the best thing to do - pay up? It's £150...
