Are IDE harddrive extinct?

I have a PC which is roughly 11 years old. Plan to give it to my son to use it. As far as i know it has cable etc to accept only IDE harddrives. Sata technology came years later.
I don't want him to corrupt my harddrive so plan to disconnect my harddrive and put in a new harddrive for his use.
Had a look at amazon and play.com websites. There is hardly any IDE harddrives to chose from. Everything is SATA nowadays.
1. Anyone know where can i get a IDE harddrive from?
2. Can my PC be converted to accept SATA harddrive?
Thanks in advance for any replies

IDE drives are pretty much dead now, as I think any that are still being sold are the remains of the stock as I think they stopped making them a while back.
If you're trying to keep an older machine working your best bet may be to find a bootable SATA controller card (they are about £15+), and that will let you use an SATA drive, or alternatively at one point there were little adaptors that would site at the back of the drive to convert it from SATA to IDE (and vice versa), which will give you much better options than trying to get an IDE drive (last time I had to source a new IDE drive it cost as much for a 160gb one as it did for a 500gb+ SATA model).
A quick google shows that PCWorld do one that costs about £6, but if you do use an SATA drive you'll also need an SATA to molex power cable as well (about £2), that should from what I can tell simply plug into the motherboard (assuming there is room) instead of a normal ide cable, then you plug a power connector to it, and run SATA data and power cables to the drive.0 -

Beware 2.5 drives do not have the same connector as 3.5inch drives.
quote from page.
IDE 2.5 inch hard drives for laptops. These are for laptops which feature the IDE (sometimes referred to as Parallel ATA or PATA) interface. Note that a 2.5 inch IDE drive has one connector which features both the interface and the power connector in one.0 -

All these are valid - but why not just leave the hard drive in, and copy everything you want from it - presumably onto a more modern drive?0

I just bought a 2.5 IDE 160Gb from Amazon the other day. £39 for a Samsung.
There seemed to be a few others to choose from. There's plenty on eBay too.
Since it was going in a 3.5 drive bay I got an adaptor bracket and cable adaptor from Maplin.0 -

Yup, 2.5-in HDs are for laptops. I still have this type of hard drive as a memorabilia of my panasonic toughbook.
I also have a PC with IDE hard drive. Just bought a second-hand HD as replacement from a seller.0
