Can I cancel Post Office Car Insurance Before 12 Months is up?

I've currently got car insurance with the post office which runs out in April this year. However I am moving from Manchester to Edinburgh in the middle of February so have been looking at car insurance quotes for Edinburgh. I think I can get a better deal by moving to a different insurer.
Does anyone know if I can cancel my insurance early and move to a different insurer? Or would l just be better to change my insurance address with the post office and get something new when it runs out in April?
Many thanks.

Car insurance is an annual contract. If you close it earlier then the insurance company have the right to impose penalties. For instance they may charge 10 months premium for 8 months cover. I think you will find it more cost effective to let it run its natural course and then shop around at renewal.I have retired from a career in Financial Services........Thank God. Any advice given may be as a result of senile dementia so dont take it too seriously.......0

You also don't get any no claims discount unless you stay for the entire year.0

Tell your insurers your new address. This could reduce your premium and they should refund the difference.
It might not be much for 3 months but worth asking.

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful.
Will just let it run until the end of the contract and then shop around.0
