It won't hurt to try back up anything as well as per rhythmsoup's post, but often with these you might not even be able to see Drive C until the boot sector has been repaired using a rescue CD.

I downloaded Kapersky 10 rescue disk and it worked brilliantly. Up and running in 10 minutes.

Hadn't heard of an anti-virus start-up disc, but it was easy to use and worked a treat.

Nice work, glad you're friend is sorted.

Did it identify the particular trojan responsible? There should be a log on drive C, it would make it easier to help others with this since it's popping up a bit on forums.
