Hi Ritch1
I agree with everything Mattymoo said.
Generally you shouldn't settle until the insurance company's third offer.
The sooner you make it clear to them that the longer they string it out, the more it will cost them, for your alternative travel arrangements, letter writing etc. the sooner they will come up with a reasonable sum.
It is worth going through the completed items on eBay etc. as you can get detailed descriptions of Astra Diesels similar to yours and what they sold for. Print these off and use comparable ones (age, mileage, condition) as evidence if you feel the insurance company is undervaluing your car.
Make sure you call the shots, and not the insurance company. If you were not at fault, then you are the victim, and should be recompensed.
If things go quiet when the ball is in the insurer's court, issue a small claims court claim against them. That should buck things up.
Good luck!0 -
Certainly when I left claims in 2004 the rate for LoU was £10/day, inconvenience was seen as a seperate head of claim which we would pay a flat £15. We wouldnt pay both LoU and public transport - if it was only a couple of buses we probably would as it cost less to pay than to argue but if it was £100 LoU & £50 alternative transport you would only get one of them.
LoU/ Hire was also paid for 5 working days after the cheque was received (ie enough time for it to clear in your bank) - without knowing when exactly someone received a cheque we therefore gave 7-8 days as all cheques were sent 1st class. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Incidentally I would suggest that £500 would be a fair p/x offer but of course the value of the payment should be the replacement value, not what you would get if you were to sell it to a dealer.
Looking on the Trader the closest comparator to your car is this:1997 VAUXHALL ASTRA 1.7 TDS LS 5dr Diesel Hatchback
Features: Diesel 5 Door Hatchback P reg (1997) : Manual, 88,000 Genuine miles with service history. Metalic Green, Alloy Wheels, Power Steering, Electric Windows, Sunroof, Central Locking, Drivers Airbag, 5 Speed, Colour Coded Bumpers & Mirrors. M.O.T'd, With all previous mot's. I think the first person to see this car will buy it, its rare to see a Astra Diesel with these genuine miles and a service history. £895
That's located in Liverpool and after a bit of haggling is what I think your car is worth.Debt at highest: September 2003 - £26,350
Debt now: £14,100
Debt free day: October 2008 :beer:0 -

Hi there,
I was in a similar situation a while back and this company provided me with a brand new Astra Diesel as a courtacy (sp) car and billed the other insurers direct! I didn't have to pay a penny.
