Absolute Cheapest Way To Amsterdam?

Hi all,
My husband and I would like to get to Amsterdam from Newcastle sometime on the afternoon of the 8th Feb, stay over 1 night, then head home the next day.
Problem is, I'm skint.
I'd gotten it into my head that iPoints did ferry vouchers for amsterdam, but it turns out they don't, and I don't have enough points for the flight thing - plus, the vouchers probably wouldn't arrive in time anyways.
It looks like the ferry is nearly £150 per person! Flights, with the new airport tax, are looking expensive too.
The National Express do coach trips for £18 per person, leaving from London - we're thinking of doing that, but we couldn't face a coach ride to London, then another coach ride so soon after....
If anyone has any tips for either really cheap rail travel to London, so that the coach is an option, or suggestions for other really cheap ways / vouchers to get to Amsterdam another way, it would be much, much appreciated.
Why do people always arrange things at such short notice

If your skint then is it really a good idea to go at all?
If you plan it properly for the summer you could get cheapy flights from a number of airports.0 -

I hitched hiked from Swansea for a University Rag Trip. It did take 24 hours, but we even got the ferry free (it was for charity and all). Total cost = 1 Litre of Duty Free Vodka to make the ferry journey more interesting..
Well, you wanted the cheapest way!0 -
Thanks for the responses.
Unfortunately, this is something that has to be on that day or not at all
If we could reschedule, we would, but its to meet some people that are being sent over to a party (I envy people that get to go to 'networking events' all expenses paid) by their work - they live in the USA, and its unlikely they'll ever come this 'close' to where we live again for at least a couple of years.
That mini-cruise looks promising, the dates are a bit off, but if we can find a cheap way back (maybe one of those flights) that could work out.
Not sure if hubby would go for the hitchhiking thing though
