Have people had to get rid of the handrail as I would like to keep in case I am able to walk up and down occasionally, otherwise I would never be able to walk upstairs without it.
Mum had hers taken off, but someone else's suggestion of raising it is a good one, if you can do that.

Main thing is that the stairlift is right for your needs, rather than the salesman's stock.

We moved the handrail to the other side.

If we raised ours it would of been to high to use.

not advice as such but the wait times are bad when you need a stair lift
my wife has been assessed as needing a stair lift a application has been put in
it needs to go up and round a 90 degree bend to the left very expensive they say

Community OT Wont even allow 2 us to have two handrails on the stairs.for in the future in case my wife's re-hab improves

we got a letter back saying there's a 6 month wait for the application to be processed
then if its passed there will be a full plan made of the stairs that will be in the 7th month
then a 5-6 week wait for the lift to be made then approx 2 weeks after that it will be fitted

all in all if were lucky we'll get a stair lift in 9 months thats a long time for the wife to sleep in the living room in a single bed and me on the settee
we've been doing that 13 week all ready..

    2011 being disabled crazy..
easy if you have the money to fund it yourself

and health and safety goes mad the things ppl have come and measured to meet regulations
bed heights.width of doors.width between bed and living room furniture.the ramp at the back door.back step heights.etc etc etc

    red tape gone mad

In our so called developed and modern society, this really should not be an issue. I feel so sorry for your plight.

Problem is, the disabled are an easy target. The cuts come in and hit us first without much of a whimper as we all have our eyes or attention fixed on our conditions and illnesses. It will only change when the TV and press take pictures of us being dragged out of our chairs when we protest.

The £75b they gave the banks today, works out at £4089 for each person. That would pay for a lot of alterations! Quick question; cannot deport a criminal as they own a cat, what part of the Human Rights Act helps the disabled?

Rant that took it off topic is over, you can go about your business now....

Thanks again for all the replies! :) :T

I have since been to a showroom to look at them and the one I'm leaning towards is an Acorn/Brooks (which I was told is the same company?) it is this exact model reconditioned 18 months old for £900 with a 1yr guarantee. The new model of it is £1300 which although doesn't seem a lot more is still anther £400 extra. :(

The salesman / company seem genuine enough and they were really bragging Acorn up how reliable they are etc. which draws me to it - although I suppose they would say that wouldn't they!

I am waiting for another company coming out to see me then I will make my mind up.

They are both independent local companies and I'm hoping for better service?

I really feel for your wife - It's shocking isn't it!

I really could not wait another 6 months especially as we only have one bathroom and that's upstairs too.

I think the way to work the system is to be psychic ;) and know that in 6 months time you will need help so that you can get yourself on the waiting list now!! :p :rotfl:

Thats the same make as mine, mine is an older version though and after 10 years its still going storng though it got new batteries a couple of years ago and a new charger but that was because my daughter accidently smashed it moving out.

The batteries were under £30 and my brother in law built the charger and he services my stairlift for a roast duck dinner!
