Urgent help please

Am running xp media centre on a HP computer (C & D partitions as per usual HP)
This afternoon the internet connection started to play up so i rebooted the machine and now i am getting the following message
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
<Windows Root>\System32\hal.dll
Please re install a copy of the above file
HELP......HOW do i recover the machine

Have you a Windows XP OS CD..?

I am presently turning the house upside down to find my CD
Have found the leaflet for it with the key code but cant find the flippin disc at the minute0 -

Try running CheckDisk from the Recovery Console - Use your disk.
