van hire insurance question

Bill Bloggs hires van to transport furniture from a to b.

his mate Sid Scroggins asks of him, can you do me a favour Bill lend me the van for a couple of hours to collect a chair from the next town ten miles away.

Bill says O.K. Sid.

Question is: in the event that Sid wrecks the van does insurance cover it or is the hirer the only person who can drive it?

It would generally cover either solely the hirer or the hirer and any other drivers they have nominated and had accepted by the hire company eg supplied drivers licences etc.

Bill could potentially also be pursued by the police for allowing an uninsured vehicle along with Sid potentially getting a no insurance conviction assuming he is not an employee.

The hire company will also pursue Bill for the costs of the claim
