Cambelt Change, 2months later Waterpump change. £500?
I booked my car in for a cambelt change at 80.000miles. When booking in I also reported a "rough engine" because it was making a faint grinding noise every few seconds. The mechanics failed to notice that it was the water pump and over 2 months the noise is now obvious. Its common knowledge that people often get the waterpump change with the cambelt to save labour costs. Am I going to face another £250 bill to get it all taken apart again 2 months down the line? I was quoted £300 to get the waterpump changed along with the thermostat which is apparently leaking water from another garage.
Should I expect to get a big discount on getting a new waterpump if I take it back?
Any advice you be a great help

They should have done it at same time just point out the error and hope they give a large discount.0

I'd conider putting another belt on, two months is enough time to stretch the old one into place, they don't like being re-tensioned.0

I agree withe the above post - I had my water pump changed at the same time as the can belt last year...for an extra £40 on what was a £500 job on my Alfa Romeo it was a bit of a no-brainer However I had research all this on the on-line Alfa forums
It would be worth your while searching out forums for your type of car OP
What sort of car do you have?0 -

If it was common knowledge then why didn't you ask them if they'd do it at the same time?
They replaced what you asked them to. You're going to face a bill for the waterpump changing which is comparable to the cambelt.0 -
Its a ford focus
Do you really think I should of asked a professional mechanic to replace the waterpump if needed? Every forum you go on the word cambelt is never far from waterpump. I was expecting them to do it just to get some more money out of me at the time, but they didn't. I guess they played it well. I'm going to ask them about it tomorrow.
Also, when they changed the belt at 80,000 they realised that the belt had already been changed, which was a surprised because Ive had the car since 60,000 and they are supposed to go to 100,000 on the original cambelt. They blamed the "rough engine" id reported on the previous person who installed the belt not timing it correctly. 3 cambelt changes on a car at 80,000...

Yes if you wanted it done, they did the job you asked them to do.0
