Avoid extra costs on car-hire

As a regular customer of car hire companies, I was getting increasingly fed up with the extra costs "to reduce your excess" - which can be up to £12 a day. I also once got clobbered £35 by Europcar for a scratch on a plastic hub cap for God's sake. They have your credit card, what can you do?
For the past 3 or 4 years I have been a customer of
http://www.insurance4carhire.com/
which takes on your excess when you hire a car for a premium of £50 a year. Clearly you don't have to hire for many days over the course of a year to make back this outlay. I also like the fact that if there are 2 named drivers, your policy also protects the 2nd driver.
Being a particularly careful, not to say lucky driver, I have never put them to the test with a claim. However it seems like a good moneysaving deal to me, and when they know there is another insurance company to deal with, the hire firms seem far less inclined to rip you off for smallish sums for damage which is really only wear and tear.
Hope this may be of interest; it is to the best of my knowledge a valid money-saving tool.
