Car Insurance Comparison

I'm a 19yo male, first time driver. And do not currently own a car.

For the last few days I've been looking at insurance quotes. I've got nearly all my quotes from MoneySupermarket.com as they are the easiest to tweak a few details and get more quotes. They also seemed to be offering the best quotes to give me an idea of how much a car would be to insure, as I've got to budget the cost of the car against the cost to insure it.

As I'm on a tight budget that means that I've been checking a lot of cars, just to see how they compare to each other (there's hundreds of pounds difference, even between cars in the same category). Originally I was getting the cheapest quotes from Elephant and Admiral. A couple of days ago, however, I stopped getting quotes from them - this was even if I used exactly the same information as before to get the quote. A new, cheaper quote then appeared from Flux Direct (who look dodgy, but I don't have much of a choice but to go for the cheapest). Although soon they also disappeared.

I need a car to commute to my new job, but CANNOT afford the prices other than those that were given by the cheaper insurers (the difference was £2000 to £4000 for most cars). I know I can shop around once I've got a specific car to insure, but I'm quite worried that I'm not going to be able to get quotes as low as I had.

So, does anyone know why these insurers can no longer offer quotes for me? Would they still be able to offer the same if I went direct to them?

Cheers,
Harry

  • Insurers can in theory change their rates several times a day, they can have a cap on how much business they want to write for a particular market segment for a particular day/ week/ month/ quarter and once that exceeded to load the rates or refuse to quote. All of this can vary by channel too so just because they stop quoting via aggregators doesnt mean you cant still quote via their site.

Ultimately if you have discovered they are generally the cheapest and aren't appearing on the aggregator when you come to have the vehicle you want either try their websites directly and/ or call them for a quote.

Many insurers guarentee their prices for 30 days from the original quote, including Admiral (I think). The exception to this is where you change what you have input, in which case it will refreah the prices and the price will be reviewed or they won't quote. If you haven't tweaked your original quotes, you may be able to retrieve it by signing into moneysupermarket and retrieving past quotes.

A couple of other points. There is nothing dodgy about Flux Direct, they are a perfectly reputable company and why don't you try other comparison sites now you know what your looking for?
