    An easier cartoon-free way is:
    a) inspect USB socket and plug
    b) orientate plug to fit socket
    c) insert plug into socket

I broke the ethernet port on my laptop by trying to insert a USB cable (in several different orientations) when I was plastered I'd had a few wines :o

I stick a piece of red insulating tape (doesn't have to be red ;)) next to the usb ports. When I plug anything in (following RussJKs method) I then stick another piece of the same tape to the appropriate side of the plug.
It's a bit of faff initially, but once set up can save valuable seconds fiddling around, while standing on one leg trying to reach around the back of the pc. :D
    Move along, nothing to see.

I knew I'd find a use for those sheets of little coloured dots that I used to mark photographic slides.

For those that don't know about old fangled technology, this was so that they were the right way up and not reversed when they were loaded into a projector.
