Ive got a job tomorrow on a small network , a pdc , one router and 3 workstations .
user reports that its slow , they have applications installed on the 3 workstations rather than the pdc but its worked fine before.
any ideas of where to start ?
ie right from pinging the server and w/s's through
not a network guy as you guessed
thanks

reboot the pdcEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Make sure they do backups, then reboot the pdc, check for viruses/patching etc.., check eventvwr, hard disk space..
What's slow? File access, an application?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
could try installing netbuei/netbios on the machines, it's much faster for lan access than tcp/ip, shame ms decided to drop it (though it's still in xp). Make sure it's the highest priority carrier on all machines, as I've seen machines running slow when their highest priority doesn't match that of the machine they are talking to.0

user says its not the router , and is so slow its almost un-usable , its not on my network so havn't come across it before ?0

try and isolate problem but shutting everything down and then bring one by one up.. server, workstation 1 etc... check cabling, make sure nothing wrong has been plugged in to router. if its a good enough router check the port logs that show collisions etc...ummm...0

no , its wired ..... will use network monitor to see if there are any problems , or performance monitor
any other ideas would be appreciated0 -
Would need to see whats is slow - check for things like cable damage.
is name resolution working properly etc.
I still reckon it'll be a layer 8 issue

How much of a cut do we get if we fix it????0

hah ...thanks chaps ....
layer 8 .... the user i presume ....... yes your probably right
lol0 -
user said it was not the router (it was a 5 port hub)
well it was the hub that was faulty , swapped it out with a very cheap hub...didnt work , moved the server closer to the hub with a shorter patch cable... did work .... moved the server back and put in an expensive hub
it works ..... cool , thanks for the help0
