I thinking about getting one for my daughter for christmas and don't know what the 3G bit is?
So please can someone explain?

3G is the bit that connects to the internet, like a mobile phone, anywhere there's a signal. You'll need a sim card. WiFi will connect to your home wireless connection, or WiFi hot spots.0

With 3G you need to also pay for the data you get using it either by having a contact or by using it on PAYG (same as a mobile).
Depending what other mobile devices she has and how likely she is going to want to connect to the internet whilst she is out and about will dictate if the 3G model is worth it or not. Personally as I have the need for multiple devices to connect to the internet whilst out and about (not always at the same time) it was better for me to add 3G sharing to my mobile contract than pay for separate 3G for my iPad and then again for my laptop.0
