Car Insurance, named drivers and no claims

Hiya,

I've posted this in another thread, but felt I wanted to open it up to more of you. Hope noone minds!

My DH has been driving forever and I've only been driving for nearly 3 years. We're going down to one car this week and realised that it would be £160 cheaper if he was the named driver. We will both be using the car 50/50.

I phoned my insurer (Swift) and he was lovely, we figured this out...

As I have 6 months left on my insurance I'll lose this years no claims if I cancel. So I should stay as the policy holder with my partner as the named driver and just change the car details. At a cost of £160... shudder...

Then in six months I don't renew and my partner becomes the policy holder.

Then after a year we switch and I am the policy holder. Each time we switch can be with whoever is the best insurer at the time.

After I have built up about 5 years of no claims, and added years on to my driving experience, then it wouldn't really matter about doing it every year as my premium would be lower, just every couple of years so we both don't lose out on our no claims.

Can anyone see any problem with this?

Hope it makes sense!!

thank you!

I thought no-claims had to be built up over consecutive years? or can you miss a year then carry one where you left off?

You can miss a year I believe, its number of years you have paid for insurance, but not made a claim

Ncd is valid for up to 2yrs so ensure that you swap the insurance around every 2yrs that way nobody loses out.

Note- Some companies expect ncd from 3yrs ago

  • Swiftcover will only give you the benefit of NCD a year old  , whilst most others will give you the benefit of NCD two years old.:T

I would suggest you go onto something like Insuresupermarket or confused.com when your insurance is about to expire and compare quotes for you and your partner as the primary driver respectively. It is rare that the best quote will be your renewal, although if you approach your existing company as a new customer, that can get you a good deal. :j
