I have the fussiest cat in the world (food)

Shes a year old (nearly 18 months) and she's always been fussy, but lately she has gotten worse, I find I usually have to change her food every 4-6 months because she goes off it, shes currently been on Felix in Jelly (Fish and Meat selection) however on Saturday she stopped eating that, so we brought her Felix in gravy, she would not touch that, we tried her on my other cats Whiskers, she wouldn't touch that, she went nearly 48 hours without eating, however she was still fine in herself, so yesterday morning I tried her on some fresh white chicken, which she ate, and now since yesterday morning that is all she'll eat, I had to end up giving her that last night and this morning!

I dont know what to do, she just is not interested in cat food anymore (wet or dry)

Have you mixed chicken with cat food? Chilled the cat food in fridge? Supposed to be at room temperature but maybe your cat wants it cold.

    CD,
I so know the feeling...Old Orbit would wolf down anything put in front of him including Chili,Curry,Baked Beans & Rice Pudding! Daisy on the other hand is a fussy little madam. She won't eat anything in gravy & usually I have to swap brands every now & again too!
Try her on P@Home 'Purely' range..Oh,and stay away from Kit E Kat..dunno what they've done to it but it's honking now, ended up throwing out nearly a full tin every day as Daisy wouldn't touch it after the first feed from the tin...
  • No you don't .... I have the fussiest cat in the world - as well as the 2nd fussiest!

I know it's hard but if you start "giving in" and feeding things like chicken, then that will be all she'll eat - think about it .... "real" chicken or tinned/pouch food ....... mmmm I know what I'd rather have.

I also have to swap my cats' wet on a fairly regular basis ... especially if the manufacturers decide to "helpfully" change the recipe which is really annoying.

Our cat went through a really fussy phase and it turns out he doesn't like anything that is "chunks in gravy" or "chucks in jelly". He likes the good old fashioned "supermeat" type catfood. Felix do this in a pouch which avoids tins in the fridge, it's branded as "Felix Meaty Loaf". P at H don't sell it but Sainsbury do.

Cat2 will only eat Go-Cat dried food. Years ago tried everything else and failed. She appears to thrive on it.

My cat always wanted what I was eating rather than his own so I just used to cook more. It worked out cheaper than throwing away cat food.

If this has worked out for you then all is well. However, I would not recommend this for cats. Cats' nutritional needs are very specific - they need high levels of protein and taurine that are obtainable from meat sources and are not as accessible in human foods which contain a greater percentage of vegetables/grains etc than is healthy for a cat's diet.

To the OP - I can understand your predicament as all cat owners go through what you are facing from time to time. It is OK to feed chicken as a one-off (particularly if puss is suffering from an upset tummy), but it is not sustainable over any length time, neither from the perspective of the cat's nutritional needs, nor (I suspect) from that of your wallet :rotfl:.

What I would suggest is that you find two or three foods that your cat does like and rotate them on a fairly frequent basis so that your cat doesn't get bored of eating the same thing all the time.

With dry food, you could try adding a little warm water to see if that tempts her: the cat's sense of smell is much more sensitive than ours, and doing this will draw a lot more of the smell out for the cat.
  • I have two fussy cats. One will only eat one particular very expensive brand of wet cat food she will not eat any treats or any other food apart from cooked chicken or salmon. My other will only eat Gocat biscuits, like a previous poster I have tried to get him onto a better brand and he won't have any of it. He will occasionally have some cat pate but doesn't like any other wet cat food, he does like most human food but only if he has managed to steal it. If you offer it to him he won't take it, he's a strange boy.
